Check Your Points Balance
Log into HDFC NetBanking → Cards → Credit Card → Reward Points Summary. Or open the HDFC Mobile Banking app → Cards → Rewards. You'll see your total available points, points earned this month, and points expiring soon. Note: HDFC reward points expire after 2 years from the date of earning. Set a calendar reminder to redeem before expiry.
Method 1: SmartBuy (Best for Travel — ₹0.40-0.50/point)
HDFC SmartBuy is the bank's travel portal where you can book flights, hotels, and bus tickets using reward points. Go to hdfcbanksmartbuy.com, log in with your net banking credentials. Search for your flight or hotel. At checkout, you'll see the option to pay with reward points. SmartBuy typically gives 10x points on the purchase amount — this is the best way to earn AND redeem HDFC points. For flights, compare the SmartBuy price with direct airline pricing to ensure you're getting fair value. SmartBuy prices are generally competitive for domestic flights.
Method 2: Transfer to Marriott Bonvoy (Best Value — ₹0.50-0.70/point)
HDFC points can be transferred to Marriott Bonvoy hotel loyalty program at a 1:1 ratio (1 HDFC point = 1 Marriott point). Marriott points are worth ₹0.50-0.70 when redeemed for free hotel nights. How to transfer: Log into HDFC Rewards portal → Transfer Points → Select Marriott Bonvoy → Enter your Marriott membership number → Specify points to transfer. Transfer takes 2-5 business days. Minimum transfer: 1,000 points. This is the highest-value redemption for HDFC points if you stay at hotels.
Method 3: Transfer to Airlines (Good Value — ₹0.45-0.60/point)
HDFC points transfer to: Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer — best for business class redemptions on SQ flights. Intermiles — good for domestic award flights on IndiGo/Air India via Intermiles. Transfer ratio and value depend on the specific program and what you redeem for. Business class redemptions give the highest per-point value. Same process: HDFC Rewards portal → Transfer Points → Select airline program.
Method 4: Statement Credit (Convenient but Low Value — ₹0.20/point)
The fastest and simplest redemption. Go to HDFC Rewards portal → Redeem → Statement Credit. Points are converted to rupees and credited to your card balance. Value: approximately ₹0.20 per point — the worst redemption option. Only use this if: (1) your points are about to expire and you have no travel plans, or (2) you have a small balance not worth transferring. On 50,000 points, you'd get ₹10,000 as statement credit vs ₹25,000+ through Marriott transfer. That's ₹15,000 left on the table.
What to Avoid
Catalog redemption: HDFC's reward catalog lets you exchange points for products (headphones, appliances, etc.). The products are marked up 30-50% above market price, giving you ₹0.15-0.20 per point. Never redeem through the catalog. Gift voucher redemption: Slightly better than catalog but still poor value (₹0.20-0.25/point). Amazon/Flipkart vouchers are the best of the gift voucher options. Auto-redemption: Some card variants have auto-redemption for cashback — check if this is enabled on your card and disable it if you want to control how you redeem.
