What Is Credit Card on UPI?

Since 2022, RBI has allowed RuPay credit cards to be linked to UPI apps (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM). This means you can use your credit card for UPI payments — scan any QR code, send money to any UPI ID, pay at any merchant that accepts UPI — and it charges your credit card instead of your bank account. This is a massive shift because UPI is India's dominant payment method with 10+ billion transactions per month, and until now, credit cards were excluded from this ecosystem.

How to Set It Up

Step 1: You need a RuPay credit card (Visa/Mastercard are not yet supported for UPI). Step 2: Open your UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm). Step 3: Go to 'Add Account' or 'Payment Methods.' Step 4: Select your credit card issuing bank. Step 5: Link the RuPay credit card to your UPI profile. Step 6: When making a payment, select the credit card as your payment source instead of your bank account. Note: Not all banks have enabled this yet. HDFC, SBI, Axis, ICICI, and PNB support it. Check with your bank if you don't see the option.

Which RuPay Credit Cards Support UPI?

Most banks that issue RuPay credit cards now support UPI linking. Key cards: HDFC RuPay cards (including some variants of Millennia and Regalia), SBI RuPay credit cards, BOB RuPay cards, PNB RuPay cards. Important: the popular premium cards (HDFC Infinia, Axis Magnus, Amex Platinum) are Visa/Mastercard/Amex — NOT RuPay — so they cannot be linked to UPI yet. RBI is expected to expand UPI credit card support to Visa and Mastercard in the future, but no confirmed timeline.

Do You Earn Reward Points on UPI Transactions?

This is the key question — and the answer varies by bank and card. Currently: Most banks treat UPI credit card transactions similarly to POS (swipe) transactions for reward points. However, some banks specifically exclude UPI transactions from reward programs or apply lower earn rates. The interchange fee on UPI credit transactions is lower than on swipe transactions, which is why some banks may not offer full rewards. Always check your specific card's terms. Do a test transaction and verify whether points were credited before relying on UPI for reward earning.

Why This Changes Everything

Until now, credit cards were excluded from India's largest payment ecosystem (UPI). This meant: street vendors, small shops, auto-rickshaws, chai stalls — all UPI-only merchants — gave you zero credit card rewards. With RuPay on UPI, you can now earn rewards on essentially every transaction in India. The implications are massive: (1) Credit card spending per user will increase significantly, (2) Reward programs will need to adapt to higher transaction volumes, (3) Visa/Mastercard will push for UPI integration to stay competitive, (4) The entire 'which card should I use?' calculus changes when every merchant accepts credit. Watch this space — it's the single biggest disruption in Indian credit cards.
