Why You Should Never Redeem Points for Cashback
Redeeming credit card points for cashback or statement credit is leaving 50-70% of their value on the table. Here's why and what to do instead.

The Value Gap
When you redeem HDFC Reward Points for statement credit, each point is worth approximately ₹0.20. When you transfer the same points to Marriott Bonvoy, each point is worth approximately ₹0.50. When you transfer to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer for business class, each point can be worth ₹0.60-0.70. That's a 3x difference in value. By redeeming for cashback, you're effectively throwing away 50-70% of your rewards. On 50,000 points, that's the difference between getting ₹10,000 (cashback) and ₹30,000+ (optimal redemption).
Why Banks Want You to Redeem for Cashback
Banks are happy when you redeem for cashback because it costs them the least. When you redeem 50,000 points for ₹10,000 statement credit, the bank's cost is ₹10,000. When you transfer those same points to an airline partner, the bank pays the airline based on a negotiated rate that often costs them more. Banks will never tell you about the 'better' redemption options prominently — they'll show 'Instant Cashback' in big letters on the redemption page while hiding transfer partner options in a sub-menu.
When Cashback IS Acceptable
There are two situations where cashback redemption is acceptable: (1) Points are about to expire and you have no travel plans — bad value is better than zero value. (2) You have a small balance of points (under 1,000) that isn't enough for a meaningful transfer. In both cases, you're choosing the lesser of two evils. If you plan ahead and redeem strategically, you should rarely be in either situation.
The Better Approach — Transfer Partners
Transfer partners are airline and hotel loyalty programs that accept your bank's reward points at a specific ratio. HDFC points can transfer to Marriott Bonvoy, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, and Intermiles. Axis EDGE points can transfer to a similar set. Amex MR has the widest transfer partner network. The value unlock happens because airline miles and hotel points are worth more when redeemed for premium products (business class flights, luxury hotel nights) than their 'cash equivalent.' A KrisFlyer business class seat from Delhi to Singapore might cost ₹80,000 cash but only 50,000 miles — that's ₹1.60 per mile. Transfer your bank points to KrisFlyer at a 1:1 ratio and you're getting ₹1.60 per bank point instead of ₹0.20 for cashback.
Getting Started with Transfer Partner Redemptions
Step 1: Create accounts with key loyalty programs — Marriott Bonvoy, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, and Intermiles are the most useful for India-based travelers. Step 2: Check your bank's transfer partners and ratios. Step 3: Accumulate points until you have enough for a meaningful redemption (typically 25,000-50,000 points). Step 4: When you have a travel plan, compare the cost of booking with cash vs. points. If the point value exceeds ₹0.40/point, transfer and book. It takes a few minutes more than clicking 'cashback' but the value difference is worth hundreds or thousands of rupees.
