Our Review

The Amex Gold sits in an interesting position — it's the most accessible card in Amex's premium lineup that still gives you meaningful MR Point flexibility. The 4x base rate matches HDFC Regalia, but MR Points have better transfer partners (Singapore Airlines, Marriott). The 8x on international spends is genuinely valuable if you travel abroad 2-3 times a year or make international online purchases. The Taj voucher at 4L spend helps offset the 9K fee. The question is always Amex acceptance — you need a backup Visa/Mastercard for at least 20-30% of your transactions. If you can live with that, and you value transfer partner flexibility over raw earn rates, the Gold is a strong choice for the 15-25L income bracket.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • + MR Points transferable to airline and hotel partners — excellent flexibility
  • + Taj voucher worth 10K at 4L annual spend covers a good chunk of the fee
  • + 8x on international and travel — strong for frequent travelers
  • + Access to Amex dining and lifestyle offers

Cons

  • - 9,000 annual fee with no waiver — must spend enough to justify
  • - Amex acceptance limited at smaller Indian merchants
  • - No fuel surcharge waiver
  • - 4x base rate is comparable to HDFC Regalia at a much lower fee
